Brazilian Training Ship Arrived In Istanbul

Today, the Brazilian training ship NE Brasil arrived in Istanbul for a four-day port visit.

The vessel is currently undertaking the 40th edition of Brazil’s Midshipmen Training Cruise, marking four decades of this naval tradition. Having departed from Rio de Janeiro Naval Base on 25 July 2026, the ship is on a five-month global voyage scheduled to conclude on 20 December 2026.

The cruise is the final phase of training for newly graduated midshipmen from the Brazilian Naval Academy. During the five-month voyage, the midshipmen will put their training into practice.

NE Brasil is based on the Niterói-class frigates and has been modified into an unarmed vessel dedicated exclusively to training. According to the Brazilian Navy, the training cruise curriculum focuses on mastering practical navigation, hydrography and complex tactical manoeuvres under real-world ocean conditions.

NE Brasil is not a total stranger to Istanbul. She has visited the city several times before. According to my archive, the last time she was here was in 2014.
