Los Angeles class attack submarine SSN-719 USS Providence docked in Aksaz Naval Base in Marmaris Turkey, yesterday.
Usually foreign warships visiting Turkey are hosted in the commercial ports for the ease of bringing sailors to the shore and back. But USS Providence is in naval base away from public for increased security, I guess.
It was announced that the visit of the submarine, currently assigned to Submarine Squadron 2 at US Naval Submarine Base New London, Groton, Connecticut, does not have any NATO connection. The submarine is expected to stay in Turkey till Monday.
Most pundits see her visit just before the NATO summit in Lisbon as a “sign”.
