>Turkish Navy is hosting a planned invitation exercise between 2nd and 14th November 2008.
The exercise Doğu Akdeniz -2008 (East Mediterranean-2008) will be held in Aegean Sea and not surprisingly East Mediterranean Sea.
Frigates, fast attack craft, submarines, landing ships, supply ships, maritime patrol planes, ASW helicopters of Turkish Navy will take part in the East Med 2008. NATO AWACS planes, TuAF’s squadrons and ships of the SNMG-1 will participate as well.
SNMG-1’s original area of responsibly is Atlantic. And SNMG-2 should be patrolling the Med. But since the end of the Cold War there is noting much to do in the Atlantic. With the inauguration of Operation Active Endeavour there are hundreds of ships in the Med that need to be hailed or boarded. I do not think that it is just a coincidence that SNMG-1 is taking part in an exercise in the Eastern Med instead of SNMG-2. I believe that given the recent situation in and around Med the SNMG-1 will spend more time in Med where as SNMG-2 will spend more time in Red Sea and around Horn of Africa.
