>The Navy of Turkish Republic

>

The official name of the Turkish navy is The Navy of Turkish Republic. (Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Deniz Kuvvetleri). I am mentioning this because today is the 85th anniversary of the Turkish Republic.

It is a custom of Turkish Navy to send a couple of warships to port cities and open them for public visiting. This year F-243 TCG Yıldırım and F-497 TCG Göksu were in Istanbul.

Ten years ago when we have celebrated the 75th anniversary, Turkish Navy organized a major naval parade in Bosporus. A destroyer, 4 submarines, 6 frigates, 6 MCM ships and various Coast guard vessels paraded Bosphorus. It was an impressing event.

I had kind of expected a similar parade for this anniversary. But there was none. I have made a mental check of the all national and international operations Turkish Navy is currently taking part of. The list is long: SNMG-2; SNMCMG-2, Active Endeavor, UNIFIL, Mediterranean Shield, Operation Black Sea Harmony, BlackSeaFor.

Ten years ago the list was considerably shorter, thus there was more ships available for a naval review. The number these operations is not going to dwindle in the near future. Thus I shall not be expecting any naval parades soon.

Good old days…
